Logitech C910 HD Pro WebCam Review

LATE EDIT: With Amazon now offering a $15 dollar rebate on this product, through Logitech, this brings the price for this unit much closer to what we think it is worth. Please read the review but do remember that the price is now around $60s. At this price it certainly looks far more attractive. Look for the words “Rebate forms for recent purchases” just under the price on Amazon.

logitech c910 pictureA lot of people like the Logitech C910 HD Pro WebCam, but not us.

At just shy of $100 it seems overpriced for what it is, although to be fair Amazon do have it (at the time of writing) for about 25% off list price. If you specifically want a Logitech WebCam there are others more worthy of your consideration.

So then at about $75 do we consider it a better buy. Not really, there are other web cams on the market today at this price point which seem to offer a lot more for your money. Shop around and you may be able to find it even cheaper. See if you can get it around the $50 mark as we feel that this is the right price point for this webcam.

So let’s see what the C910 has to offer:

The product description says its a HD WebCam, and while you could say that this is true it may be stretching that truth a little too far. You’ll find that it can indeed certainly record in 1080P full HD it most certainly cannot do face-to-face streaming video calls at that resolution. So for your Skype calls (or whatever instant messaging system you prefer) the unit will revert into 720P mode.

To be honest 720P is going to be adequate for most of the populatio. I suppose I just have an issue with Logitech trying one on when they state that this is a full 1080P HD WebCam.

The bundled software has been reported to bring x64 systems crashing down. Logitech seem to have overcome this initial shortcoming by offering a more robust download from their website that looks like it has solved this particular issue.

Alright, we can’t keep on slating this particular device so let’s get on to the good things that we like about it:

It ships with a Carl Zeiss glass lens as standard, and that has to be good news. These lenses really are top quality and do produce incredible images.

The unit has dual noise cancelling microphones which reviewers have stated do make a noticeable difference to voice quality over a call. In the videos we listened to, they did not offer a significant improvement over normal webcams, but nor were they any worse. It also offers stereo sound which to be honest is just a gimmick. We can’t see any normal user taking advantage of, or needing, this feature.

The Logitech C910 is compatible with a large number of instant messaging systems including Logitech Vid, Skype, Microsoft Live, and Yahoo Messenger.

If using the C910 to record video then you can send that with a simple one click solution straight to your Facebook or YouTube accounts.

Logitech C910 HD Pro WebcamThe sensor takes good quality 10 megapixel photos, although this is software enhanced. It is naturally a five megapixel sensor.

Any video calls made are in 16:9 widescreen mode. A great improvement over the norm. This aspect is much better suited to today’s widescreen computer/laptop displays or televisions that are all sold as widescreen now.

The setup of the camera and the installation of the included software is very straightforward and easy enough for the novice to accomplish.

The C910 Logitech WebCam is compatible with a Mac OS.

It is, even with all of shortcomings, a remarkable improvement on the C900 model from Logitech.

At the end of the day there are around 300 positive reviews on Amazon extolling the virtues of the Logitech C910 HD Pro WebCam. If you feel that the $75 is a price you can afford to pay then it may just be worth your while giving it a go. We however, are going to advise you keep a little of that money in your pocket and go for something a little more downmarket in the price department but offering more or less the same functionality as this high end unit.
